NHL teams hire doctors to treat player. By doing so teams are able to rely on the doctors’ ethical obligations to the patients in terms of responsible treatment. If the family wants to go after doctors for unethical or negligent practice that would be another matter.

It might even be the way to go because a victory there means less money but it might ensure future doctors provide proper treatment, while losing a suit to the league accomplishes nothing.
