As we are now well into the International break, and the majority of the Premier League’s finest are helping their countries secure a place in next years World Cup, it’s time for the Farm Club’s EPL Team of the Month for August.
There we’re many players who started this years EPL very well, and with only 3 games gone, it was rather tough picking a starting 11 to suit the team, especially when the season hasn’t really picked up yet. However, various players fully deserved a mention and this Team of the Month is based on an overall selection from the writers here at The Farm Club.
Simon Mignolet – Liverpool F.C
1, Mignolet has been outstanding so far this year, and is one who fully deserves to be in this team. He has kept clean sheets in all 3 of Liverpool’s games, making the Merseyside giants the only team left in the League with a 100% record, and the only team to have not conceded a goal yet.
Key Moment - Liverpool’s opening game of the season against Stoke, saw Mignolet put on a stunning display, saving a penalty in the final few minutes to give his team all 3 points.
2, Pablo Zabaleta – Manchester City F.C
Zabaleta, City’s player of the year last season, has kept somewhat of the same form through to this season. As he currently has 2 assists for his club, and has contributed to 2 clean sheets so far this season.
Look for Zabaleta to be solid for City again this season, as he’ll have Jesus Navas playing on his wing. That connection should, and will cause many problems for any club facing the blue half of Manchester.
Key Moment - First game of the season, home to Newcastle. Zabaleta set up teammate Nasri in their 4-0 run away win to get the ball rolling this year.
3, Ryan Shawcross – Stoke City F.C
Usual as solid as a rock, in the center on defense for Stoke. Ryan Shawcross has continued to be dominant in defense, and is still causing other teams problems from set pieces. Despite his all or nothing style of play, and his constant yellow cards, Shawcross has been one of Stoke’s most consistent players so far this year.
Key Moment - Stoke’s second game of the season against Crystal Palace, saw Shawcross make vital tackles in defense, and cause havoc in and around the box from corners and freekicks, which paid off when he scored his club’s winning goal.
4, John Terry – Chelsea F.C
Despite his off-field dramas, John Terry has still been getting things done on the pitch this season, with 2 clean sheets and his Chelsea team still undefeated, Terry deserves his spot in this team.
Key Moment - Most recent game, away to the Champions Man United. John Terry was a part of a back four who stopped the likes of Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie from finding the back of the net, in a tight scoreless draw.
5, Seamus Coleman – Everton F.C
The Irish International has been great for both club and country this season, and despite Everton drawing all three games, Coleman has been among the scoring, with his goal on the first day of the season against Norwich, and the defense, as he’s helped his side keep 2 clean sheets this season.
Key Moment - Opening week, his goal against Norwich showed just has dangerous Coleman can be when going forward along his side of the pitch.
6, Pablo Hernandez – Swansea City AFC
The Swans Spanish star, has had a great start to the season, setting up 2 and scoring one of his own. Pablo has played big parts in all 3 of Swansea’s goals this season, and has been a big reason why they won their first game of the year last weekend.
Key Moment - Last weekend’s fixture against West Brom, saw Pablo assist on Davies’ early goal, and saw him net one of his own later on. Leading his team with a fine performance and to their first 3 points of the season.
7, Frank Lampard – Chelsea F.C
The Chelsea middle man has been given the chance once again by the ‘Special One’, and has proven his worth despite his age. Lampard has notched a goal and an assist. But his stats aren’t what make Frank Lampard worthy of this team, it’s his worth rate, always putting in 100%, along with his continued devotion to being a leader for his club.
Key Moment - First game of the season against Hull, when Frank Lampard scored a great free kick, after having his penalty saved earlier in the game, Lamps didn’t let anything get to him, as he put in a great performance all round.
8, Yaya Toure – Manchester City F.C
Among all of Man City’s new signings, the one player who has continued to stand out isn’t a new boy. Star man Yaya Toure; consistent, solid, and newly free kick expert has been one of City’s best players so far. Two goals, and pure midfield dominance. But not just any goals, two top quality free kicks.
Key Moment - Hull City came to Manchester and looked like getting something from a game which they had no right in doing so, until Yaya Toure put all thoughts of an upset to bed, with a great free kick in the 90th minute, to seal a 2-0 win.
9, Danny Welbeck – Manchester United F.C
Despite being played up front on various occasions, Welbeck seems to play his best football when dropping back just in front of the midfield, or even pulling out wide. A player of that ability is vital when players like Rooney are injured, as we saw against Liverpool last week, despite losing, Welbeck played a solid game when dropping back. Doing this, Welback has a couple of goals to his name, and has taken the second most amount of shots for United.
Key Moment - Once again, the first week of the season against Swansea, Welbeck scored one of the best goals we’ve seen so far, a cheeky chip over Swans goalkeeper Vorm, his second of the game. Giving Man United a 4-1 victory.
10, Daniel Sturridge – Liverpool F.C
Sturridge has been one of the top strikers so far this season, leading the Premier League with 3 goals. Even though Liverpool have won all three games 1-0, Sturridge has been in the right place at the right time, getting the all important goal for his club. Making him a no brainer for the Team of the Month.
Key Moment - The big derby against Manchester United saw Sturridge head Liverpool into an early lead, a lead which would be sustained until the final whistle, giving Liverpool their most important win thus far.
11, Christian Benteke – Aston Villa F.C
The only other player with 3 goals to his name so far, Benteke has been a force to be reckoned with since joining Villa. After deciding to stay with the club he has reassured fans by showing he is 100% committed to this football club. His connection with English forward Gabriel Agbonlahor caused the likes of Arsenal to suffer and really struggle defensively.
Key Moment - 3-1 win over Arsenal to start Villa’s campgain off. Benteke missed a penalty but headed the follow up in, and then later notched a second, as they went on to beat Arsenal, giving them their first opening day loss in recent memory.
There are many other players who may have deserved to be in this team, but from what we gathered, this 11 deserved it the most.
