Thursday afternoon the Official Blackhawks twitter account said the organization would be making a major announcement, and everyone knew that Coach Q was getting new paper to stay in Chicago.
The man “whose music fills our feathers as we feel our passions fly” has not done much wrong in his tenure in Chicago. Five straight playoff appearances, 222 wins, and two glorious shiny things.
Coach Quenneville is certainly deserving of such a deal. The man is on his way to the hall of fame as a coach and mustache aficionado. Players absolutely love playing for him, and (for the most part) Q and Stan have been on the same page as far as what it takes to win. The core has bought into his system, and the results speak for themselves. Coach Q is definitely chipping his face into the Mt. Rushmore of Chicago coaching legends with Ditka, Jackson, and Halas.
Sure, he has a penchant for playing with his toys like Bollig, #GorillaSalad, and John Scott. And I will scream the day that Brad Winchester suits up over a better hockey player. But that is where Bowman can play the checks and balances system and take away the stinking face punchers from Q’s grasp. The man has come full circle for the majority of Blackhawks fandom. A man crowned as a genius during the first cup run, to scapegoat during the first round exits, and now returning back to genius. I would expect much of the same in the future.
All in all, there is not really much to say. A two time Cup winning coach got a contract extension. Probably the least surprising NHL news of the summer. The Blackhawks locked up their guy and rightfully so.
Now fix the fucking power play.
