Jhonny Peralta one of the more surprising names listed in the latest PED scandal

In recent years, the Detroit Tigers have had some dominating performances that could generate rumors of PED usage.

The Herculean feat of winning the first MVP award by a pitcher since 1992 by Justin Verlander and the Triple Crown and MVP triumph over Mike Trout for Miguel Cabrera could get some people to assume the worst about their individual characters.

However if any Tiger would be linked to PED usage, no one’s first guess would be the less-than average shortstop Jhonny Peralta.

However, according to SI.com who could only be citing classified sources, Peralta’s name was found in the records of Anthony Bosch, the former operator of a now defunct anti-aging clinic Biogenesis in Miami.

SI.com maintains that Peralta was not directly tied to purchasing PEDs.

Though, it still should raise some questions regarding why his name would appear in Bosch’s records at all.

Peralta has denied any and all involvement with Biogenesis and Anthony Bosch.

Last week, it was reported that Peralta had lost 18 pounds since the end of the World Series and that he felt he was “in the best shape of his life.”

Being 18 pounds lighter wasn’t going to turn Jhonny into a Gold Glove award winner in one off-season but it sure was going to help. Unfortunately, that hope might be based on a fallacy.

Even with the findings from Biogenesis being made public, Major League Baseball has yet to enforce or change their ruling on PEDs with the newest bunch of “violators.”

Nothing’s been totally proven yet, although with names like Alex Rodriguez and Ryan Braun coming up again, it makes one wonder how true these allegations are.

If proven, a punishment on Peralta would also punish the Tigers.

There isn’t much depth behind him at shortstop and another down year from the position would hurt the organization.

Perhaps GM David Dombrowski would seek temporary infield help if a decision was forthcoming.

Like other players implicated, the gloomy mood at Spring Training in Lakeland during the next few weeks will be lurking as more and more evidence will be revealed.

While its doubtful that it will seriously impact the chemistry of the team, Peralta’s involvement with Biogenesis will be on everyone’s minds for the time being.
