ESPN’S Chris Mortensen: Oregon Coach Chip Kelly to the Eagles
Leading up to his teams game Fiesta Bowl matchup against Kansas State, Chip Kelly was drawing interest from several different NFL teams.
Kelly has drawn interest for years but that didn’t stop them again this year, as the Eagles, Browns and several other teams had interest in the Oregon coach.
Earlier this month, Kelly declined all NFL offers and it looked like he would be returning to Oregon. It looks like he did a 360 though, because ESPN’s Chris Mortensen is reporting that Kelly will become the next coach of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Nobody knows for sure what caused the turn around in Kelly’s decision but it could be impending sanctions for recruiting violations he committed at Oregon.
There has been speculation that Pete Carroll did the same thing when he left USC for the Seahawks in 2010.
Through all the teams that he was linked to since the end of the season, the Eagles have always made the most sense for Chip Kelly.
At Oregon, Kelly made the team into a juggernaut with speedy players who could run the hurry up and keep their opponents off-balance.
They had a high scoring offense that was faster than anybody else in College Football. Kelly had the Oregon Ducks playing in a BCS Bowl in each of his 4 years at Oregon and the Eagles hope that his college success will transfer to the NFL.
Kelly to the Eagles was the best move for the coach because of the talent that’s already in place in Philly.
Despite their record in the last two years of the Andy Reid era, the Philadelphia Eagles are loaded with talent on offense and have a lot of talent on the defensive side of the ball.
While Michael Vick may have played his last game in Philly, the rest of the Eagles offense makes sense for what Kelly is known for running.
He will have to make changes to his offense to adjust to the NFL game but the talent is there for him. Much like what he had at Oregon, he has one of the best and fastest running backs in the NFL in LeSean McCoy and unlike Andy Reid I would expect Kelly to ride him.
He also has speedy wideouts and if he chooses to keep him, a speedy quarterback.
For awhile it looked like the Eagles may have lost out on all of the best coaches. They were patient though, and the best coach for them fell into their lap. Chip Kelly will be joining the Eagles next year and it should be a great fit for both sides.
